Khairpur, June 21, 2009: PPP MNA Nafisa Shah has said that an inquiry should be conducted to find out how the funds of three crore rupees released each year for SCARP tube-wells are spent; and why still the SCARP tube-wells remain out of order. She assured that she would take efforts to provide irrigation water to the tail-end abadgars of Sobhodero and Faiz Gunj talukas.

Disown infamous identity

Historically, Sindh is known for custodian of women. But now a new identity is being foisted on it. Killing of sisters, daughter, wife, sister in-laws etc over some petty matter have become order of day.
Newspapers daily carry number of painful stories......
In Sultankot district Shikarpur. One Arbab Shar shot dead his wife in the presence of his minor daughter and later buried her body without formal funeral. The parents of deceased woman said that the accused was gambler and used to subject the torture to the deceased. On the same day Ahmed Ali Janwari injured his wife Habiban over some domestic matter. Makhan Khatoon was killed near Dakhan.
One more painful aspect of this incident is due to non availability of lady doctor the heir of deceased were running from pillar to post to conduct autopsy.
Sindh has held values time when beating or torturing a woman was considered as crime and such offender was termed as coward one. But today, woman is sold and chopped into pieces on one or the other pretext.
What has gone wrong with the nation which claims to be inheritor of 5000 year old civilisation? as it was not hesitating to such painful and shameful acts.

In fact these all incidents are attack on peace, honour.
This should be checked at all levels and by all the stakeholders.

The government should take notice of these incidents and deal with iron hands to those who are playing with woman like a football.

Change in US policies

US President Barack Obama telephoned President Asif Ali Zardari, a day after his special envoy met the Pakistani leader with a message from his boss urging Pakistan to be a ‘stalwart ally’ in the fight against terrorism.
The two leaders reportedly agreed on the need for a strategy to try and resolve the region’s problems.
Telephonic talk between two leaders was in the backdrop of US decision to reviewing its Afghan and South Asia policy..
US might be changing its policies in its own interest but it would also have some positive effects in the region. Since last nine years entire international community have been demanding of US to change its infamous policies of Bush governemnt.

These policies had not only destroyed the world peace and brought instability and uncertainity in the world but also tarnished the image of US. President Obama contested the election on the slogan of change.
It would be correct to say, US public voted for change while voting to Obama. Now time has come that Obama should fulfil his promise which he made during election campaign.
The review of the US strategy should include new ideas, better coordination with allies and other concerned countries.
PPP has also contributed for bringing change in US policy about Asia and Afghanistan, because PPP has been complaining against Bush policies, and persuading the US to review harmful policies. It appears today results are coming out.

US should adapt a policy of live and let others to live.

Should students take part in Politics?

Should students be allowed to take part in politics? According to my point of view politics should not be a forbidden fruit for students and to a certain limits, they should have liberty to take part in politics.
Politics concerned with affairs of the country, its constitution, its policies, foreign relations and so on. As a citizen every young man is interested in these affairs.
With the development of literacy, people read newspapers even students and common men also read newspapers and give their comments on the current situation.
Their views regarding politics may be very superficial, lacking depth study etc, but due to their interest in politics these are valuable. School boys and girls are also very much interested in thrilling news and as their politics sense develops they are keen to take part in politics.
This also happen in the colleges and universities, where students stand for union elections representing their political parties and they get more and more interest in the political affairs of the country.
Some people believe that as politics is a controversial game and spoil the career of young generation; hence students should keep themselves aloof from politics.
They believe that our colleges and universities should stop political activities. They should take part in academic activities.
If they involve in politics or allow their students to take part in it, it means that they are doing disservice to the nation. By opting for politics students waste their precious time which they should utilize in getting education.
But the question arises that how we can isolate politics from life? Today life is very complicated and it is absurd to think that any citizen may remain disinterested in the political life of the country. If so, how is it possible to keep our students, cream of the society, away from politics?
No doubt there are chances that students may be misguided and consequently, they may become tools in the hands of one political party or the other. But we should guard them against these dangers. Let them face the issues boldly.
We must develop in our students the minds having the right political consciousness. They should get practical training in educational institutions and thus be allowed to take part in politics in restricted way.
Instead of keeping students away from politics it is better to allow them in this field under proper guidance.

Standard of education: shifting of responsibilities

Standard of education: shifting of responsibilities

It has become fashion to blame and criticize some one. But no one is ready to think for a moment as to who is truly responsible for all that. No doubt education is a very big issue of any society, needs attention of all the stakeholders, i.e. government and society. Just talking about low quality of education and holding the authorities only responsible for its decline, makes no service and sense. It would be just shifting of responsibilities. In fact situation demands strong will and powerful action.

A philosopher said, “The best gift from a father to his child is education and upbringing". To fix responsibility and understand the entire scenario lets start from the beginning. The first step of educating a child starts from home. These are parents who are responsible to provide education atmosphere to their children. It is the place, where interest of a child for education is developed.
If parents are educated, they want their children should be educated. They wish to see them successful in their lives.
Pakistan is an agricultural country, majority of its population belongs to rural areas and they are bounded with their environment, hence they are unable to take serious interest in education. That is why we find low literacy rate and low standard of education in our rural areas as compared to urban areas. In rural areas children have fewer opportunities for education. A majority of rural population thinks that education matters a very little in their lives, as it is no more useful for them in practical life. Another factor which hampers education is discrimination between boys and girls which is observed by the parents. Boys are allowed with maximum facilities to get higher education but girls are discouraged and at the most they are allowed to have primary education. This criteria results into less literacy rate.
It is uphill task to change the mentality of people in a male dominated society. Furthermore, in case of Pakistan, it is more difficult due to poor governance and lack of access to justice.
Not only non governmental sectors but the government officials admit that in rural areas school and college teachers are getting salaries at their homes without attending the schools. Studies show that a large number of ghost teachers who in connivance with the educational officers and through political influence do not perform their duties in schools and colleges. Sindh minister for education Pir Mazharul Haq is on record that in Sindh over 3000 schools were practically lying closed. This practice is continuing since years.
The reports also suggest that in some schools, if teachers are present, they do not pay proper attention to their students deserve. Practically we are creating an illiterate generation carrying degrees in their hands.
Poor monitoring, political patronage and lack of interest by the community has destroyed our education.
When government schools fail to provide quality education and government and other concerned authorities failed to change the situation it opened the doors for commercialization of this basic sector which has been a vehicle of change. This gave rise to mushroom growth of private educational institutions sectors.
It is strange phenomena that in even katchi Abadi you will find private schools and private doctors. This is basically no confidence against the government’s health and educational system which has failed to deliver.
The tragedy not only ends here. A few private schools have quality education that too on higher cost. A number of private schools lack basic infrastructure and qualified teaching staff. Practically they are as bad as public sector schools. This situation has further commercialized the education in shape of private tuitions and so called institutes. This all have made quality education rather proper education for children of common man a distance cry.
Literacy rate in the country as claimed by the government is very low. It stands 48 percent, this also includes those who can read and write their names. However different non governmental institutions question official figures about literacy rate.
There is urgent need to find out real causes of declining standard of education, which was creating illiterate carrying degrees in their hands.
I think parents, government and our system is responsible for this decline. Therefore it should be dealt with accordingly.
